I first came across a version of this green smoothie recipe while on vacation in Maui several years ago.  One of the resorts near where we were staying in Wailea had a beachside cafe that served a variety of juices, smoothies, coffee drinks and light breakfast items each morning. My sister and I really enjoyed how tangy and refreshing this smoothie was and were determined to try and recreate it once we arrived home. After a few incarnations of the recipe I feel like we got as close to the real thing as you can get. I love the taste, but even more than that I appreciate the nutrition and health benefits all of the ingredients have to offer.

This recipe is full of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, fiber and anti-inflammatory ingredients. Spinach is an all around powerhouse of nutrition benefiting your brain, eye and blood health. Ginger aids with digestion. Pineapple adds that tropical twist and boasts loads of vitamin C. Cayenne can offer a modest boost in metabolism and celery and green apple are full of fiber and natural electrolytes. Ok, are you ready to start your day off right?

Feel free to play around with proportions when blending as I’ve given approximations of how much to add of each ingredient. Recipe makes 1 large or 2 medium smoothies.

3-4 large handfuls of spinach

4 celery stalks

1/2 large green apple

1/2 cup frozen pineapple

Handful of fresh parsley, stems included

Small thumb of ginger, aprox 1/2 inch long

Generous pinch of ground cayenne

Juice of one lemon

Add just enough filtered cold water to blend thoroughly

TIP: I peel and freeze my ginger and cut off a small piece as needed for my smoothies.

I hope you enjoy this green smoothie recipe! It’s a great one to add into your smoothie rotation when you want a healthy start to your day. Let me know if you give it a go.
