In today’s post I’m sharing 5 elements of tropical boho decor anyone can use. One of the overarching themes of boho decor is it’s ability to bring a bit of calmness and serenity to a room. So, whether you are a die hard minimalist or neutrals only lover, there is a place for each of these tropical elements in your home.
# 1 Faux or Natural Greenery
Greenery in the home not only gives you a taste of the outdoors but it has also been shown to have some serious health benefits. Indoor plants can boost your mood, reduce stress and help clean the air. Now, faux plants might not have the air cleaning benefit but, they do have the same mood improving and stress reduction qualities and they are lower maintenance. Below are a few of my favorite tropical plants that will thrive inside or are easily found in faux versions. Whichever you choose I’m sure they’ll make you smile every time you walk into the room.
- Palm varieties
- Bromelaid
- Banana leaf tree
- Ti Plant
- Orchid
- Monstera
A few of my favorite sources for faux plants are Afloral, Nearly Natural and Pottery Barn.
# 2 Natural wood and fibers
Here I want you to think about your flooring, furniture, window treatments and lighting. This is another way to bring the outdoors inside. Consider a light colored, natural wood flooring option such a bamboo. Cane and rattan furniture is a great option and it’s reminiscent of classic tropical interiors you might find in the Bahamas or Hawaii. And don’t forget your lighting. This can be a relatively inexpensive way to update and give your space a laid back vibe. Some of my favorite lamp shades come in woven water hyacinth, straw or jute.
# 3 Light colored fabrics
The first thing that comes to mind for me is an over the water bungalow with oversized white curtains flowing in the breeze. Choosing light colored fabrics for couches, chairs, throw blankets and rugs can really give your rooms a sense of openness. I love that boho decor is all about bright and airy spaces that feel calming and free of clutter. Try incorporating whites, creams, pale pastels and shades of beige next time you refresh your space.
# 4 Tasteful Tropical Art Prints
Clearly the focus here is “tasteful”. Tropical art prints can range from over the top cheesy, think “beach please” and similar quotes or scenes of bright blue VW Buses with a range of brightly colored surfboards nearby. Opting for more subtle ocean and tropical scenes or art prints can add some sophistication to a room, create less visual clutter and add to that open, calming effect we’re looking to achieve. One of my favorite sources for tropical prints is Etsy. They have a great selection of printable files or full size prints in every style imaginable.
# 5 Strategic pops of color
Although our main theme with boho decor is bright, open and airy, a few strategic pops of color are a final touch that shouldn’t be overlooked. A bit of color can really add some visual interest and a bit of personality to a room. The key is being very deliberate with your choice of colors and knowing when too much is too much. A good place to start is with a color palette. Choose 2-3 colors that complement each other and try adding them in using vases, picture frames, throw pillows, coffee table books, catch all trays or even a couch.
